Harboring: Taylor Point

If you have a personal-use lighthouse, you're leading off this article, player...

Taylor Point is the focus of today's Harboring entry.

Taylor Point is just up the street from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the village of Buzzards Bay in the town of Bourne. She is on the west end of the Cape Cod Canal.

Taylor Point is owned by the town, and operated by the Department of Natural Resources.

She's a small marina in physical size, but they packed over 140 slips into her. They also are sporting a gas dock with gasoline, diesel and a sanitary pumpout station, private bathrooms & showers, a marine store and a public boat ramp with parking.

Taylor Point has ridiculous Location value. You can go right out into Buzzards Bay, or scoot up the Canal and check out Cape Cod Bay. Buzzards Bay is like that, which is part of why we have so much traffic. Other groups favor Bourne for the same reason... we had a Hell's Angels clubhouse for a while.

This boat was very clean.

As they say in Louisiana, "Fish and Grits, then a morning with the s**ts."

Taylor Point needs better flag action on that sweet flagpole of theirs. Trust me, I see a lot of harbors doing my job. They've got game to step up.

Amazingly, "Dashed On The Rocks Harbor" was already taken, so they named it after some guy named Taylor (Editor's Note: It was named after Boston Globe founder General Charles Taylor. Taylor had a house in the eponymous area, now known as Beachmoor, that was the only house in Taylor Point to survive the 1938 hurricane).

There's a lot to like here. Nothing says "Sea Duc Shun" like a bright yellow boat. Nothing also says "Banana Boat" like a bright yellow boat. It's always fun to see people in Massachusetts fly the Confederate flag, even if it's only half of one. The rebel flag is also a funny thing to associate with "Don't Tread On Me," as the South most indeed did get Trod Upon before surrendering. Amazingly, a black guy owns this boat... OK, I made that up.

If Skipper and Gilligan were driving this boat on their ill-fated voyage, there would have been eight Castaways. If Tom Hanks stowed away on the trip, and he just might have if he knew something we didn't, it'd be like 9.5 or something. Brains ain't me forte, mate.

"Ah, the ladies, Chief. They hate you goin' out..."

"... but they love you comin' in."
Taylor Point is also home to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
